Episode 89: A Fun, Festive, and Freaky Little Wine Factoid

Steph and Val are scurrying around this week like caffeinated elves. Before we sign off for the week we wanted to take a minute (or 10) to wish you all a sparkly holiday season. However or wherever you are celebrating, we hope there’s something beautiful in your glass. Feel free to share your joy on our FB page, Twitter, or Pinterest so we can all celebrate together! We also couldn’t resist dropping a fun, festive, freaky little wine factoid we think you’ll enjoy. So from our homes in Colorado to yours around the world, cheers~

‘Tis the season of joy, good cheer, paying-it-forward, and mini-podcast-episodes. We want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Please show us how you’re celebrating this time of year! Whatever holiday you choose to honor, or, even the season! Share your bubbles, beer, wine or whatever is making your spirits bright. In some cases, maybe your spirits (get it?) are making your holiday bright! No doubt they will ours….

We’ve also rearranged a few things on our web page. There is a slew of fun wine reading recommendations, and a search box for whatever you’re shopping for (maybe at the last minute?) on our web page. But before we leave you to your festivities, families, escapes, or however you’re rocking out the next week, we think you’ll get a kick out of our factoid.

Factoid: Over the weekend of December 10th we had our Chateauneuf 13 SWEbinar. It was a huge hit, and Jane shared some fun wine trivia with the group. Feast your eyes upon this decree:

Did you know, that in 1954, the mayor of the village of Chateauneuf du Pape, Lucien Jeune, passed a series of laws in response to alleged UFO  (cigare volant) sightings? As with many French regions protective of their wine heritage, the people and city council felt the need to put minds at ease.

Since then it has been interdit (or forbidden) to fly over, takeoff, or land in the vineyards. If you are silly enough to land your flying saucer amongst the syrah, grenache and mourvedre or the surrounding communities, your ship and little green passengers will be taken into custody.

For more on this, here’s a link to The Telegraph’s article that also includes some other goofy laws, including one that says, “Drinking alcohol at work is forbidden – unless it’s wine, cider or beer.” Check. We’re so down with this law.
