Episode 98: A quick “shot” of beverage & glass history

Steph and Val Can’t Come to the Mic Right Now … but we’ll return your calls for wine edutainment as soon as possible! This micro-episode will make you wonder, “Where did the term shot glass come from?” And, perhaps, “Will Val and Steph manage to stay off YouTube – or the police blotter – in Orlando this weekend??” Click, clink, cheers – and thank you for your continued support of Wine Two Five!

That’s right, during this episode we were in Orlando at the lovely Caribe Royale resort attending Podfest!  We have a quick “shot” of trivia coming at you in the meantime.

 Podfest and why

  • We want to make our show the best it can be
  • We want you to get the most from your time with us yammering away in your headphones
  • We want to mingle with other podcasters and find best practices so we can continue to make the best of our time to:
    • Sustain the show & it’s growth
    • Not go bat shit crazy spinning our wheels
    • Be more efficient so we can put more time into bringing YOU the best possible content and experience
    • Be more responsive to the needs/wants of our listeners
  • Also, we’ll be attending the premiere of The Messengers: A Podcast Documentary & the red carpet event! We expect this project to be a lot like Somm but with microphones & headphones instead of corkscrews & wine glasses.

Factoid:

Where did the term “shot” of whiskey – where did that come from?

There are multiple legends for where this word and term comes from.

Is it the shot gun bullet? Or maybe the glass used for your writing quill filled with lead shot to hold the pen upright? Maybe it was a place to put the little bits of lead shot that are stuck in your roast quail or whatever game you were eating back in the day?

Of course Val has a few of these things in her house she whipped out for effect during this recording. Steph got a kick out of it. Believe it or not, folks have made beer steins out of these things. Talk about a shot, and a heavy one at that!

Naturally, there was not attempt to drink out of it. (This is a 105mm round from an AC-130 gunship that was “demilitarized” that was given to Val in Afghanistan during OEF.) Maybe we’ll stick with the smaller versions.
